A Visit to Queenstown

Queenstown, located on the South Island of New Zealand, is an area of friendly people and "remarkable" beauty. Located in the Remarkable mountain range next to Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is a resort known for many recreational activities including jet boating, bungy jumping, and whitewater rafting.

Above are two pictures of the Remarkables taken from our hotel room balcony. The mountains look different depending upon the time of day so we had a lot of fun seeing how many different pictures we could take.

These are pictures of Queenstown taken from the Skyline Gondola.

What a great way to spend Boxing Day!

There are two different theories about the origination of Boxing Day, which is celebrated on December 26, the day after Christmas.

One is that the name is derived from the alms boxes in churches which were opened and their contents distributed to the poor on that day.

The other is the earthenware boxes that apprentices used to carry around with them when they were collecting money gifts from their masters' customers. At one stage postmen, dustmen, lamplighters, road sweepers, errand boys etc., used to go to the houses and establishments they had worked at on Boxing Day to get gifts.

There are a lot of older English people living in Western Australia who refer to the presents they buy as Christmas boxes.

Boxing Day information was supplied by LM_NET member Lisa Gannon from western Australia.
